Tyler Herro will have the greenest light of his career in his first season with his hometown Milwaukee Bucks. With an opportunity to earn himself a sizeable payday next summer, that's a blessing, but the guard will face plenty of challenges along the way. For instance, the Bucks open the season with an incredibly difficult schedule that will test Herro from day one.
Bucks' schedule shines spotlight on first option Herro
Milwaukee's schedule from the start of the season to December 2 is a gauntlet.
The only teams they face that did not make the playoffs last season are the Washington Wizards (landed No. 1 overall pick AJ Dybantsa), the Chicago Bulls (added All-Star Norman Powell and top-four pick Caleb Wilson), the Indiana Pacers (have a healthy Tyrese Haliburton), the Miami Heat (traded for Bucks icon Giannis Antetokounmpo and landed four-time champion Klay Thompson), and the Brooklyn Nets (acquired All-Star Julius Randle). No game here can be penciled in as a win.
If the Milwaukee Bucks don't find their stride early, their hopes this season could very well be in the gutter as early as December. It won't be all on Herro to keep the team afloat, but he is the top option and the engine that will ignite the team most nights. He appears eager to take on the biggest role of his NBA career, and this stretch could very well dictate whether he is truly capable of the challenge.
The bright lights await Herro in his first Bucks season
Throughout his entire tenure with the Miami Heat, Herro was always a complementary piece to either Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, or both. That's not the case anymore. While players such as Ryan Rollins or even Brayden Burries could potentially surpass him in the pecking order over time, this team is Tyler Herro's right now.
That means he is the player defenses will primarily game plan against. In this stretch, he will likely be defended by players such as Amen Thompson, Jrue Holiday, Jaylen Brown, and an entire Miami Heat team that wants to send him a message. Will Herro hit the ground running and embrace the task, or is he destined to struggle with such a lofty challenge ahead of him?
If the Milwaukee Bucks want to start the season positively, they desperately need Herro to adjust to his new role quickly.
