Tyler Herro is already playing himself into a dangerous financial situation

Tyler Herro looks good, but do the Milwaukee Bucks really want to pay him a massive contract?

The Milwaukee Bucks completely changed the course of their organization this summer when they traded franchise legend Giannis Antetokounmpo. In the return package, they got Tyler Herro. And Herro has been putting up some impressive numbers for the Bucks so far this season.

However, Herro is on an expiring contract. If the Bucks want to keep him around in Milwaukee, they are going to have to hand him a massive payday this summer. And the better Herro plays this year – the more he stuffs the stat sheet – the more money he’s inevitably going to want in free agency.

So, the Bucks are in a tough spot. Should they want to give Herro a huge contract? Will he want a max? Could they get anything for him on the trade block? All are questions they will have to ask themselves.

Tyler Herro's stats are great, but they are also inflating his price

Through his first four games in a Bucks uniform, Herro has been putting up some impressive stats. He’s helping the team out in a bunch of categories, all while remaining very efficient, especially from deep.

Herro is averaging 23.5 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.8 assists while shooting 46.6% from the field and 43.3% from behind the three-point line on 7.5 three-point attempts per contest.

Those are All-Star numbers. Well, they would be All-Star numbers if the Bucks were to win enough games to warrant having an All-Star. That doesn’t seem very likely.

Milwaukee is just 1-3 through its first three games. So, though Herro is putting up some great stats, they aren’t exactly leading to ideal results. That’s the conundrum.

Herro can average a ton of points. He can shoot the ball well, set up his teammates, and even rebound. But do his stats lead to winning at the highest level? Or is he best-suited as a third option? The latter seems more likely.

Yet if Herro keeps putting up stats like this, he will inevitably want to be paid like more than a third option. And that’s probably not something the Bucks want to get involved in.

So, at that point, you’re thinking about the trade market. Can the Bucks get a good package in return for Herro’s expiring contract? Could they add some draft capital to their cabinet?

That would probably be better than having to pay him this summer, because if Herro keeps playing like this, he is going to want a big-time payday. And the Bucks shouldn't want to be the team to give it to him.
