The grass isn't always greener; plenty of former Miami Heat players have learned that over the years. For whatever reason, when certain players leave Miami, they often become a diminished version of themselves. The Milwaukee Bucks are hoping that doesn't happen with Tyler Herro, who is set to be their top option this coming season.
Two clear examples of post-Heat regression
Caleb Martin and Gabe Vincent were two crucial Heat players in recent memory, particularly during their run to the 2023 NBA Finals.
Martin had back-to-back career years in the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, averaging a combined 9.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 0.9 steals per game. Yet, in two seasons since departing, the forward, who has been with the Philadelphia 76ers and Dallas Mavericks, hasn't conjured that same magic, averaging just 5.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.
The former two-way monster who gave the Heat a constant shot in the arm just averaged the fewest minutes per game of his career this past season.
After starting in 22 games during Miami's most recent title run, in which he averaged 12.7 points and 3.5 assists while shooting 37.8 percent from deep, Vincent took his talents to the Los Angeles Lakers before landing with the Atlanta Hawks. In 16 playoff games since, he has averaged just 2.9 points and 0.9 assists while hitting 28.9 percent of his shots from the 3-point line.
Of course, it would be incorrect to say that every player who leaves Miami regresses, but it has been a trend in recent memory. There have been plenty of conspiracy theories as to why, such as the change in discipline, coaching, or environment in general. Now, Tyler Herro will look to be one of the players to avoid falling into this category.
A big year could be on the horizon for Tyler Herro
Tyler Herro has everything he could need to have the best year of his career. Not only is he returning to play for his home state, but he's also looking like Milwaukee's lead option. With the ball in his hands plenty and a familiar environment both with his surroundings and with players he got traded with, the guard should be more than comfortable.
Making the All-Star team for the second time should be within Herro's reach. Yes, the conference has an assortment of talented guards, but with this upcoming opportunity, Herro should be among those players. With contract talks looming, the chip on Herro's shoulder should be big, giving him all the more motivation to not only avoid regression but also have his best NBA season yet.
