For years, Tyler Herro was a thorn in Milwaukee's side. Now, he's arguably the Bucks' best player and someone who will guide them in this new era. After spending his years in Miami as a complementary piece, he is the top option on his hometown team. It's a big leap, but Herro is ready for it, and several veterans who also gave Milwaukee problems in the past have helped prepare him, in his eyes.
Herro credited a handful of his well-known veterans from his time in Miami to The Athletic's Eric Nehm (subscription required).
“I think my time in Miami has prepared me for this,” Herro said. “Playing with great players — Jimmy (Butler), veteran guys, Andre Iguodala, Jae Crowder, Goran Dragić, a bunch of different guys who I’ve learned from throughout my career — and to kind of be in that lead role now, it’s a responsibility that I think I’m ready for.”
Bucks' enemies could gift them ultimate blessing
Just hearing those names could send shivers down the spines of many Bucks fans. Jimmy Butler, particularly, gave the Milwaukee Bucks plenty of trouble over the years—though Milwaukee dished it right back during that 2021 title run. Iguodala, Crowder, and Dragic were all on that 2020 Heat team that sent the Bucks home early in the NBA Bubble.
Now, those very players could be the ones to help bring the best out of Milwaukee's next franchise centerpiece. Both on and off the court, Herro learned plenty from them. The guard has used those lessons to go from being a reserve to Sixth Man of the Year to All-Star to now No. 1 option on a team. The next goal, the loftiest of them all, is leading his team to the promised land.
Tyler Herro has a golden opportunity awaiting him
People have already started calling him "Hometown Herro." The guard is suddenly in a position that most kids dream of; he's the top option on his hometown team. What more could he want? Well, an extension would be nice. Herro is currently eligible for a new contract, but the Milwaukee Bucks may wait to see how he performs in his new role before committing to him long-term.
Bypassing an extension now would give Herro all the more motivation to perform. If he puts together the best season of his career, he'd be destined to earn a significant raise and continue to play for his hometown team for the foreseeable future. After years of being dangled in trade talks with the Heat, it could be the type of stability he longs for.
Before any of that, though, Herro has to put everything he learned from Butler, Iguodala, Crowder, and Dragic to use. Bring that toughness and leadership. Produce in bunches. Do everything you can to be the new face of this franchise. The floor is yours, Tyler Herro.
