The Milwaukee Bucks are at the very beginning of their rebuild. They just traded Giannis Antetokounmpo, but they don’t have any of their own draft picks for a long, long time. As a result, they should be looking to gather as much draft capital as possible. And that means they should seriously consider trading Tyler Herro.
Herro is a good player. He was an All-Star in the 2024-25 campaign. But is there really a world where the Bucks are competitive by the end of his prime? Will he be an integral part of the next Bucks playoff team? Probably not. So, why not trade him for more picks? The lottery doesn’t even matter for Milwaukee, since it doesn’t own its own picks.
Trading Herro for the best possible package of young players and draft capital is the best path forward for the Bucks in the post-Antetokounmpo world.
Bucks should trade Tyler Herro for draft picks
The Bucks spent all of their first-round draft capital trying to build around Antetokounmpo over the years. Now, they’re left trying to fend on their own without it.
They traded some to the New Orleans Pelicans in the Jrue Holiday trade, and then, just a few years ago, they traded even more firsts to the Portland Trail Blazers in the Damian Lillard trade.
So, even though tanking under the current lottery odds is bad, it doesn’t matter for the Bucks. Their record won’t affect their own pick. So, being in the relegation zone would only hurt the team that owns their pick.
Therefore, the Bucks should consider any and all trades that could get them more draft capital, even if it makes them substantially worse. That’s where a potential Herro deal comes into play.
If the Bucks could land two firsts and a young player, or something comparable to that package, in exchange for Herro, it would be a massive win. They need more youth.
Herro is already 26 years old. He would be much better suited as a secondary or tertiary player on a really good team. Unfortunately, right now, he just doesn’t have any real use on the Bucks.
Rather than keeping him around for the upcoming season, the Bucks should try to squeeze as many draft picks as possible out of Herro in a trade.
They need to load up on as many picks as possible so they can take as many swings in the draft as possible. That’s how they’re going to improve their future.
