The Golden State Warriors wouldn't get rid of Stephen Curry for anything, not even if it meant having a better shot of landing Giannis Antetokounmpo. With that, their pursuit for the power forward is over. For context, insider Jake Fischer explained on a Bleacher Report livestream that Giannis isn't exactly enamored with the idea of playing the role of second fiddle to Curry. Giannis to the Warriors is dead.
Giannis saw what happened with Kevin Durant
In 2016, Kevin Durant left the OKC Thunder, where he was a beloved figure and franchise icon, to join the Warriors. It was a bold move, joining forces with another top player and a formidable all-around unit. Despite winning two NBA Finals MVPs there, Durant was always in Curry's shadow, as he was the one who was the homegrown talent whom the fans adored.
Even today, Durant's decision is still criticized. His decision to leave OKC for the Warriors will follow him to his grave. Giannis knows he could suffer a similar fate. Yes, Curry is older now, and in several years, the team could become Giannis' entirely when the star guard retires. However, until then, it is Curry's team and his only. Giannis likely doesn't want to be in that shadow.
Curry IS Golden State. He brought them back to relevance and will finish out his career as the most accomplished player the franchise has ever had. He's propelled them to plenty of success, but he is also the reason they won't get their hands on Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Bucks shouldn't be beat up over Giannis' stance
It's not like the Warriors had a compelling trade package for Giannis anyway. Sure, every single draft pick they can trade would be nice to have, but they don't have any compelling players. Draymond Green or Jimmy Butler with a torn ACL? Those aren't exactly blue-chip prospects who would help a team jumpstart a rebuild. Pass.
Thankfully, the teams that Giannis has eyes on would offer him more of an opportunity to be the top dog AND give Milwaukee an adequate return. Miami has the combination of young players and picks that could blow any other suitor out of the water. The Celtics are interesting if they can find someone to take Jaylen Brown in a deal to send more assets to the Bucks.
No matter where Giannis ends up, this latest revalation makes it clear that Golden State will not be a key factor.
