Bucks could suddenly be in a dangerous spot with Giannis Antetokounmpo

It's (past) time.

It's NBA draft month, so, in other words, the Milwaukee Bucks will finally receive clarity about Giannis Antetokounmpo's future. As Jimmy Haslam said, he can either sign an extension or go somewhere, but whichever it is, the team wants a resolution in the next few weeks. What they need to happen is a trade, but what the 31-year-old recently said could change that.

In an interview with School of Hard Knocks, Antetokounmpo said he hopes he's in Milwaukee for "many more" years.

He can make that more of a reality by letting the Bucks know he wants to sign an extension when he becomes eligible on Oct. 1. Maybe that truly is what he wants, but it's not the outcome Milwaukee should be rooting for. That might sound wild, considering players like Giannis don't come around often, especially not to a small-market team.

The thing is, Antetokounmpo will turn 32 in December, so in the first half of the 2026-27 season. His age and the injuries he's dealt with over the past few seasons (he played just 36 games in 2025-26) are concerning not just to teams interested in trading for him but also to the Bucks.

Bucks have to trade Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason

If Milwaukee signs Antetokounmpo to a max extension in October, it could look back in a few months and regret it, whether that be because of injury concerns or the team's outlook (maybe even both).

For the Bucks to have the best chance at getting the kind of value they want in return for him, a trade needs to happen this summer. And preferably before the draft.

Milwaukee already probably won't get the kind of package it wants as is. Teams will be more wary than ever to give up first-round picks for the next few years under the new anti-tanking reform, especially for one whose best days could already be behind him. Trading for Giannis wouldn't guarantee a title, but if a team does so, it will have to feel confident that it will lead to a championship.

As Antetokounmpo gets older, the odds of that happening will go down. If you tack on a new max extension to that, there is a world where he could be untradable altogether. That might not seem like it'd ever be reality, but in today's NBA, it could be.

If the Bucks knew that paying Giannis would make them a true contender in the East, none of this would matter as much. That hasn't been the case for the past few years, though, and it doesn't seem like that will change in time for next season.

Milwaukee can't afford (literally) to delay the inevitable any longer. It's time to trade Giannis, even if he's saying that he hopes to stay where he is, assuming he really means that. The Bucks have to think about their future.
