The Milwaukee Bucks are reportedly considering a two-team deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo that involves Jaylen Brown and the Boston Celtics, per Marc Stein. That goes against everything they have communicated throughout this process about wanting to explore going younger and landing blue-chip prospects. It feels like a tactic to get other teams, such as Miami, to offer more.
Bucks could be trying to frighten Heat
Miami and Boston are the two likeliest suitors for Giannis. Someone could snag him out of nowhere, but at this point, it looks like a two-team race. The Milwaukee Bucks want to squeeze as much out of either team as they possibly can if they plan on trading their franchise icon. Flirting with the idea of accepting Boston's package could force the Heat to up their urgency and throw more on the table.
It's unclear if the Heat have really put everything on the table in a big move for Giannis. Perhaps the holdup could be the number of young prospects they want to include. HoopsHype's Michael Scotto reported that Nikola Jovic, Kasparas Jakucionis, and Pelle Larsson have come up in various trade scenarios. Seriously having interest in Brown could be Milwaukee saying, "Give us them all or else."
With the NBA Draft just a day away, everyone here knows a deal could be close, given that the Bucks said they want this all sorted out by then. Time to submit final offers is coming up. Palms are getting sweaty. It's do-or-die time. Miami, will you go all-out and cave to Milwaukee's lofty demands or let a generational talent go to a conference rival? The Bucks are holding their feet to the fire.
Brown in Milwaukee wouldn't make much sense
From the moment trade rumors with Boston first surfaced, the idea for the Bucks would be to reroute Brown to a third team for additional assets. He would have plenty of suitors who could help fuel what would be a rebuild in Milwaukee. However, if the Bucks want to keep the All-Star wing for themselves, it signals a desire to keep competing.
Would the Bucks really have a shot at making the postseason with Brown as their top option? There is a chance, especially with a new coach in Taylor Jenkins at the helm, but this team would still need far more to get back into title contention. It would make far more sense to flip him to Atlanta, Portland, or some other team with desirable young players and/or draft assets to further stock the cupboard.
Time will tell if Milwaukee has legitimate interest in Brown or if this is all to get Miami to raise their bid.
