With each passing day, it feels less and less likely that Tyler Herro will ink a contract extension with the Milwaukee Bucks. The guard should have no problem with that. While long-term security could help him sleep easier at night, Herro will have an opportunity to increase his value even further this coming season with the most prominent role of his career.
Herro isn't worried about an extension
Speaking at a basketball camp over the weekend, Herro told reporters that he wasn't worried about an extension and that he didn't want it to be a "burden" hanging over anyone. He's knocking out two birds with one stone here, showing good leadership by not dramatizing contract talks while keeping his options open, as a larger paycheck could be in his future.
If Milwaukee extends Herro right now, it will be based on what he's done in Miami. It would be eye-opening if those offers were close to the maximum, given that the guard is coming off a down year and spent much of the season injured. His best bet would be betting on himself, playing out things on his expiring contract, and then seeking a bigger payday next summer.
As constructed, Herro is the Milwaukee Bucks' top option. This is his team. That opens the door for him to put up numbers unlike anything he's come close to before, increasing his value in the process. That is the dream for any player on an expiring contract. Who knows, depending on how well he performs, perhaps a max contract wouldn't be so far-fetched a year from now.
Expectations are high for Herro
Talking to those same reporters at the camp, Tyler Herro said the chip on his shoulder is probably the biggest it's ever been. After being mentioned in trade rumors for years, the guard finally got moved in a blockbuster deal for Giannis Antetokounmpo. That, along with the opportunity to earn himself a big raise, has to be motivating factors for the guard.

Herro has shown that he can be a very good complementary piece on good teams. He's been to the NBA Finals twice, but he was never the guy on those teams. Now, the runway is there for him to prove he can be the guy. If he proves he can rise to that next level, he will get paid like the guy. It all starts with Herro putting together his best NBA season to date.
