There's been plenty of chatter and uncertainty about Tyler Herro's future with the Milwaukee Bucks. Despite a Bucks executive telling Spotrac's Keith Smith earlier this offseason that the team would "love" to get a deal done with the guard, who is on an expiring contract, nothing has transpired. Not even a murmur since then. All signs point to both sides holding off until next summer.
Herro, Bucks holding off makes sense
In the grand scheme, there isn't much benefit for either side to agree to an extension right now.
The Milwaukee Bucks likely want to see how Herro performs as a first option before they commit to him long-term with what would be a sizeable contract. On top of that, they also need to see if he can stay healthy after playing a career-low 33 games last season. If they decide to pivot and trade him at the deadline, his expiring status will also make him more attainable for other teams.
On Herro's end, he could seek a bigger contract than what the Milwaukee Bucks are offering—if they have something on the table. This coming season will be the first time he's a legitimate top option on a team, which could lead to new heights. With that, of course, could come a lucrative new contract to keep him as Milwaukee's centerpiece moving forward.
It's mutually beneficial for both sides to hold off right now, and the lack of chatter about a new deal makes it clear that both sides know this.
The best path forward for Herro, Bucks
Herro's best bet to earn himself a long-term deal to stay in his hometown starts with him making his second All-Star team. If the guard can reach those heights, it will mean he is in the midst of the best year of his career. Milwaukee has a ways to go before they regain title-contender status, but if Herro can make this team feisty, it will only strengthen his case to stick around as a focal point.
Barring some last-second surprising change, Tyler Herro is set to bet on himself. He appears more than motivated to return to his home state and lead the charge every single night. That sets the tone, but the numbers will be more important than the mindset. Herro has an opportunity to alter his legacy in a major way with the Milwaukee Bucks this coming season.
