Tyler Herro's first taste of being a lead option will come during the Milwaukee Bucks' preseason slate, which was just announced. Milwaukee will play the Minnesota Timberwolves, OKC Thunder, Charlotte Hornets, Chicago Bulls, and Indiana Pacers. There will be plenty of stout defenders in that slate, which should give Herro a great test.
Bucks' preseason opponents have solid defenders
Anthony Edwards. Jaden McDaniels. Ayo Dosunmu. Cason Wallace. Alex Caruso. Royce O'Neale. Isaac Okoro. Andrew Nembhard. Aaron Nesmith. These are all defenders of various levels, but they can all give Herro trouble, whether it's due to their length, physicality, athleticism, or any other trait that lends itself well to the defensive end.
Whether he's battling the savvy Caruso, the pesky Nembhard, or the lengthy McDaniels, the goal will always be the same for Herro: win the matchup.
In the past, being defended by the other team's best defender wasn't the norm for Herro. Playing as a complementary piece in Miami, he was treated as such. Now, the Milwaukee Bucks are his team. He is the lone recent All-Star on the payroll, and opposing teams will treat him like it. Defenses will lock on to him before anyone else, and he must embrace the challenge.
Herro would benefit from strong preseason
Tyler Herro has said all of the right things since joining the Milwaukee Bucks. He's excited to return to his home state and represent them. He thinks the Bucks can be better than many are projecting them to be. It's all great, but none of it matters unless he's performing well on the court; that's what people will truly judge him by.
Luckily for him, Herro has the pieces needed to thrive. He already has chemistry with the players he came to Milwaukee with. He has an excellent coach in Taylor Jenkins. Players like Ryan Rollins and Brayden Burries will complement him perfectly in the backcourt. The Milwaukee Bucks just need the guard to play his game and be the best version of himself. The results will follow.
Herro's preseason performance alone won't be the end all be all. It will be his first action as a Buck. Yet, if he jumps out and dazzles by shining against some of the NBA's preimer defenders, there will certainly be more reason for optimism about what this team is capable of with him leading the charge.
