There has been some recent chatter about the Milwaukee Bucks potentially being a trade suitor for Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal.
While it feels more speculative than anything, NBA insider Marc Stein says that the Bucks are being painted as a team more likely to target Beal than Jimmy Butler if they are hunting a big name before the trade deadline. With the Suns having a well-known interest in Butler, that means the Bucks could help facilitate a trade by taking in Beal if they so desired.
Fueling these rumors further is the fact that the Bucks have registered interest in Beal before, with the team reportedly making a run at him before they landed Damian Lillard.
As this trade chatter spreads, however, it's clear that the Milwaukee Bucks should not be too thrilled with the idea of bringing in Beal. Let's analyze a few reasons why.
The Bucks need more defense
If the Milwaukee Bucks indeed make a trade, strengthening their defense should be the primary goal. That's why the Jimmy Butler rumors make sense, as he could undeniably help them on that end of the basketball court. However, one player who would not do them any favors is Bradley Beal.
Though he earns steals due to his active hands, Beal has never been known for his individual defense. He'd be an awkward fit with Damian Lillard, as neither are known for their defense. Sure, they may put points on the board, but their defense may cause problems elsewhere.
His contract is unfathomable
Bradley Beal is making $50 million this season, $53.7 million next season and has a player option for $57.1 million the following year. That's a lot of money for a player who is currently having one of his least productive seasons and is not getting younger.
If Beal's regression continues, tying themselves to that contract could be a major blow to the future of the Milwaukee Bucks. They would have to be certain that Beal could push them over the edge, as the bill they would be paying in this scenario would be insane financially.
Khris Middleton might simply be better
He's had his own share of issues recently, but one could argue that Khris Middleton is better than Beal at this point. The numbers currently tip in Beal's favor - Beal is averaging 17.1 points to Middleton's 12.6 - but Middleton is still working his way back from offseason ankle surgeries.
Given his scoring prowess, pristine facilitating and chemistry with Milwaukee's stars, there's a case that Middleton fits in better with this group. As he gets healthier, Middleton's numbers may even surpass Beal's production. Oh, right, he also makes $20 million less than Bradley Beal this season.
Unless the Milwaukee Bucks are getting significant draft compensation to absorb Bradley Beal's massive salary, they should stay far away from any deal where he lands in the 414.
